Mixing Geopolitics and Business –

By ESSEC Professor Nestorovic –

Seminar in Jakarta –

Last month, the Indonesian French Chamber of Commerce and Industry and ESSEC Asia-Pacific business school organized a seminar in Jakarta.

We were there. Here are some insights :

The seminar was short, and 1 hour seemed like 1 minute on this wide topic.

Especially when explained by ESSEC Business School’s captivating Professor Cedomir Nestorovic.

In his book « Geopolitics and Business: Relevance and Resonance », Professor Nestorovic explores the intricate interplay between geopolitics and business.

The book analyzes how corporations navigate geopolitical dynamics and how geopolitical theories influence business strategies.

The book underscores ASEAN ’s growing significance in global business due to its expanding population, rising purchasing power, and strategic geopolitical positioning.

Professor Nestorovic highlights that ASEAN businesses face challenges in a post-globalization era marked by events which have disrupted the once-aligned interests of states and corporations.

In ASEAN, corporations must now actively manage geopolitical risks, as states exert pressure to align investments with “friendly” countries.

The book examines how concepts like disruption, hegemony, and strategic rivalry resonate in both geopolitical and business contexts.

The book targets business students and corporate leaders, equipping them with tools to assess and respond to geopolitical risks.

It emphasizes that corporations in ASEAN are no longer shielded by state policies but must proactively engage with hybrid conflicts.

Professor Nestorovic advocates for innovative corporate strategies, such as establishing geopolitical units and appointing Chief Political Officers to navigate state-corporate relations.

Published in 2024 by Springer, this book is essential for understanding how ASEAN businesses or businesses in ASEAN can thrive amid geopolitical complexities.
