BLOOMBERG is a global financial, software, data, and media company founded in New York in 1981.

Today, the company employs over 20,000 people worldwide.

In 2023, Bloomberg expanded its presence in Indonesia by launching Bloomberg Technoz.

It is a platform delivering news and insights on economics, business, finance, and technology in Bahasa Indonesia.

On November 19, 2024, Bloomberg Technoz introduced its first video podcast, Bloomberg Technozone.

It is hosted by Ms. Pandu Wisaksono Sastrowardoyo, a renowned expert in emerging technologies such as blockchain.

The inaugural episode tackled a sensitive yet pressing topic: online gambling in Indonesia.

Despite being illegal, online gambling has become a nationwide problem, with Indonesians reportedly losing an estimated USD 50 billion annually.

Indonesia has a population of 280 million (the fourth largest globally) and a relatively low GDP per capita of USD 5,000.

This presents a lucrative but troubling market for gambling organizations.

Many individuals lack financial literacy, confusing gambling with investing, which makes them vulnerable.

Even for the financially savvy, the line between some crypto investment platforms and online casinos can appear blurred.

Most gamblers come from lower-income backgrounds, and their losses exacerbate social problems.

Recognizing this, the Indonesian government recently announced plans to address the issue.

Adding to the complexity, illegal gambling platforms operate from countries where gambling is legal.

These platforms rely on Indonesian workers. For example, estimates show a surge in Indonesians employed in Cambodia’s gambling sector—from 3,000 in 2019 to about 150,000 today.

The Bloomberg Technozone video podcast is a unique platform to follow and learn which technology-related topics are important and discussed in Indonesia.

Future episodes are coming. Crypto of course will be one of the topics.
