Last week, Jean-Noël Barrot, the French Minister for Foreign Affairs, embarked on an official visit to Jakarta, setting the stage for a momentous year in France-Indonesia relations.

In 2025, our two nations proudly celebrate 75 years of diplomatic ties—a milestone that underscores a shared history and a promising future.

During his visit, Mr. Barrot held high-level discussions with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, Foreign Minister Sugiono, and ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn.

On March 26, 2025, he also engaged with the French business community at the ambassador’s residence—an event we at Cintasia were privileged to attend.

His visit lays the groundwork for an even more historic occasion: the upcoming visit of the President of the French Republic to Indonesia in May 2025.

This landmark trip will commemorate our 75-year partnership and also open a bold new chapter in Franco-Indonesian collaboration.

The ties between France and Indonesia run deep, spanning defense and security, economic cooperation, and vibrant exchanges in culture, science, and academia.

France is committed to strengthening and expanding these bonds in the months and years ahead.

Mr. Barrot highlighted key areas for deepened cooperation.

Economically, Indonesia—home to the world’s fourth-largest population and a dynamic, booming market—offers immense potential.

In agri-food and energy, French companies already active in Indonesia bring expertise and innovation, while Indonesia, in turn, presents opportunities for France.

This synergy is vital for France and Europe to secure strategic autonomy, particularly in critical minerals. Take Eramet, a French firm established in Indonesia for over a decade, which is poised to expand its footprint further.

In security and defense, collaboration is already thriving. Just weeks ago, the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle made stops in Bali and Lombok, signaling France’s commitment.

Looking ahead, France aims to foster a shared strategic culture between our armed forces, amplifying our partnership.

Mr. Barrot’s visit bore fruit with the signing of a partnership agreement with Indonesia’s LPDP (Endowment Fund for Education Agency)—a step toward richer scientific and educational ties.

As a member of BRICS, the G20, and ASEAN, Indonesia is cementing its role as a global powerhouse.

France recognizes it as a cornerstone partner for the decades to come.

Mr. Barrot’s message was clear: Indonesia is open for business, and France is leading the charge.

So, don’t hesitate—come to Indonesia.

Export your goods, share your services, and seize the opportunities this vibrant nation offers.
