Macroeconomic Outlook 2026–2030 –
Indonesia’s growth is stable –
But nothing else is –
We’ve gone through a new independent research brief on Indonesia’s macroeconomic outlook, titled “Stability Under Strain,” published by Ignited Research.
The report is built on three sources: the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), Indonesia’s Central Statistics Agency, Bank Indonesia and Ministry of Finance statistics, and the Indonesian Business Council.
The headline is real GDP keeps growing near 5% through 2030. That’s no longer the interesting number.
What’s changing is what sits underneath it.
An oil shock is hitting Indonesia’s budget rather than its trade volumes, pushing the rupiah to record lows and forcing Bank Indonesia to raise rates into a slowdown.
Tax revenue remains stuck near 9% of GDP, against an Asia-Pacific average near 19%.
Moody’s and Fitch both moved Indonesia’s outlook to negative, citing policy predictability rather than debt.
One risk stands out above the rest: MSCI kept Indonesia in its Emerging Market index in June 2026 but set a November 2026 deadline for progress on market accessibility (free float, ownership transparency, settlement rules).
A downgrade to Frontier Market status would trigger mechanical, valuation-blind selling from index-tracking funds, at a moment when Indonesia is already funding a widening current-account deficit with portfolio flows.
The report scores it as the single highest-intensity risk in its entire matrix, and notes it’s also the cheapest to fix: the fixes are technical and domestically controlled.
The report proposes “Four Anchors” (fiscal, monetary, market, and household) as the sequence needed to restore credibility before growth can convert into broader prosperity.
Since the report’s cutoff (July 2026), President Prabowo replaced Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa with his deputy, technocrat Suahasil Nazara, a move markets read as a bid for exactly the kind of policy predictability this report says investors are pricing in.
