Djakarta Mining Club Event –
Secondary Exploration of
Bauxite, Nickel and Tin –
Last week, the Secretariat Djakarta Mining Club held its 13th anniversary at the Hotel Dharmawangsa, Jakarta.
As usual, the event was lovely, insightful and beautifully organised.
I especially liked the presentation of Mr (STJ) Budi Santoso, Director of Mineral Resources Planning Management (Mining Industry Indonesia = Mind ID).
My favourite insight from that presentation is the concept of secondary exploration.
Secondary exploration is emerging as a key lever to maximise value from existing mining assets.
It focuses on reprocessing tailings, recovering overlooked by-products, and unlocking value from lower-grade or previously uneconomic ores using improved technologies.
It applies especially to Bauxite, Nickel and Tin.
This approach is faster, less capital-intensive, and more sustainable than greenfield exploration.
In this context, solid-liquid separation becomes critical: efficient dewatering is essential to make reprocessing economically viable.
This is where solutions from CHOQUENET play a strategic role.
Advanced filter press technologies enable higher recovery rates, reduced waste volumes, and improved water recycling, turning what was once considered waste into a profitable resource stream.
We will exhibit next month in Jakarta along with CHOQUENET at MetConnex. Come visit us!
Indonesia is rapidly strengthening its position as a global mineral powerhouse, leveraging vast reserves of nickel, copper, bauxite, tin, coal, and gold. See the picture.
Already a leading producer in several commodities, the country is shifting from resource extraction to value creation through ambitious downstream industrialisation.
Government policies, such as the ban on raw ore exports, have accelerated investment in smelters (almost 20 new smelters per year since 2017, see picture) and domestic processing, generating significant value uplift across the supply chain.
At the same time, Indonesia is addressing a critical challenge: ensuring long-term resource security to sustain this expansion.
A new generation of exploration strategies is emerging, combining geoscience, data integration, and AI-driven prospectivity mapping to unlock untapped potential, particularly in underexplored regions like Papua.
In a context of global supply chain disruption and rising demand for critical minerals driven by energy transition and digitalisation, Indonesia is positioning itself not just as a supplier but as a strategic hub in the global mineral ecosystem.
